SUMMARY:The Art of Giving
DESCRIPTION:Members of the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts present their annual holiday show\, The Art of Giving\, from November 11th through December 31st with an Opening Reception on November 28th from 6 – 9pm. \nEach holiday season the members of the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts transform the gallery to showcase original holiday ornaments and hand-made gifts. The gallery’s 21 members work in a variety of media\, providing a wide array of fine art and fine craft for holiday shoppers. The glass art includes hand-blown and kiln-formed vessels\, ornaments\, hummingbird feeders and paperweights. The jewelry in the show covers a variety of styles and techniques\, from copper and bronze to sterling and fine silver necklaces\, earrings\, bracelets and rings\, some with gold accents and stones. Visitors will also find metal sculpture\, figurative sculpture\, turned wood\, pottery\, and hand-made furniture. Oil\, watercolor\, and acrylic paintings\, scratchboard\, collage and mixed media work festively surround the three-dimensional pieces on pedestals. \nHoliday ornaments and other decorations are an annual specialty. \n\nArtist Lynn Wartski has created one-of-a-kind felted wool ornaments made with quilt batting and colored wool which she needle-felts to achieve the desired shape and fullness.\nFurniture maker Pete Rodrigues made ornaments by cutting thin slices of hardwood\, filling voids in the wood with transparent colored epoxy.\nPainter Chris Graebner creates small scratchboard ornaments. Each ornament is different\, and each is an original piece of art.\nPotter Evelyn Ward has created hand-built\, raku-fired bird ornaments in many sizes and colors. She also has adorable ceramic ladybugs.\nArtist Jude Lobe has created more of her southwestern themed shaman ornaments as thoughtful holiday gifts.\nPainter Ellie Reinhold has returned with her unique lotus pod ornaments for the holiday season.\nArtist Sally Terrell has created framed mini scratchboards\, which can hang either on the wall or a tree.\nAs always\, glassblower Pringle Teetor has made beautiful blown-glass balls in many colors\, patterns and textures. FeST 2026 will be on Saturday\, December 6th from 10am- 2p at St. Matthews Episcopal Church. This event is named in honor of the efforts of the ladies sewing society who in 1867 used what was then a novelty\, the Christmas tree\, as a way to sell their wonderful handiwork in the community. The Society raised funds for much of the architectural additions and furnishing that still grace our historic church building. Today all proceeds from FeST go to help people in need in Orange and Durham counties through donations to local non-profit organizations. Please come shop for holiday gifts\, fill your table with delicious baked goods\, sit down at the table with us to enjoy a BBQ lunch\, and tour our historic church sanctuary.  All are welcome!

The glass art includes hand-blown and kiln-formed vessels\, ornaments\, hummingbird feeders and paperweights. The jewelry in the show covers a variety of styles and techniques\, from copper and bronze to sterling and fine silver necklaces\, earrings\, bracelets and rings\, some with gold accents and stones. Visitors will also find metal sculpture\, figurative sculpture\, turned wood\, pottery\, and hand-made furniture. Oil\, watercolor\, and acrylic paintings\, scratchboard\, collage and mixed media work festively surround the three-dimensional pieces on pedestals. \nHoliday ornaments and other decorations are an annual specialty. \n\nArtist Lynn Wartski has created one-of-a-kind felted wool ornaments made with quilt batting and colored wool which she needle-felts to achieve the desired shape and fullness.\nFurniture maker Pete Rodrigues made ornaments by cutting thin slices of hardwood\, filling voids in the wood with transparent colored epoxy.\nPainter Chris Graebner creates small scratchboard ornaments. Each ornament is different\, and each is an original piece of art.\nPotter Evelyn Ward has created hand-built\, raku-fired bird ornaments in many sizes and colors. She also has adorable ceramic ladybugs.\nArtist Jude Lobe has created more of her southwestern themed shaman ornaments as thoughtful holiday gifts.\nPainter Ellie Reinhold has returned with her unique lotus pod ornaments for the holiday season.\nArtist Sally Terrell has created framed mini scratchboards\, which can hang either on the wall or a tree.\nAs always\, glassblower Pringle Teetor has made beautiful blown-glass balls in many colors\, patterns and textures. DESCRIPTION:Before headlines and hashtags\, news traveled by word of mouth\, and in antebellum Hillsborough\, gossip could change lives. Join historian Dr. Sylvia Hoffert for a captivating talk and reading from her new book\, “Wagging Tongues and Tittle Tattle: Gossip\, Rumor\, and Reputation in a Small Southern Town.”\n\nDr. Hoffert calls on a particularly rich collection of primary sources\, including diaries\, letters\, oral histories\, census data\, court documents\, church records\, and psychiatric hospital logs\, all relating to Hillsborough\, North Carolina\, to argue that gossip and rumor were central to the formation of interpersonal relationships and an integral part of small-town life in the antebellum South. They exposed the insecurities and anxieties of the town’s inhabitants. Indeed\, they served as important weapons in the power struggle between the white slaveholding elite—who tried to exert\, maintain\, and consolidate their control over community life—and the Black\, white\, and mixed-race men and women\, free and enslaved\, who did their best to challenge the socioeconomic status quo. And they exposed fissures in the social fabric that discretion\, good manners\, and historical amnesia could not obscure. The result was that\, on a day-to-day basis\, the shady streets of Hillsborough may have seemed peaceful to the casual observer. But underneath all that tranquility\, the town was ripe with competition and conflict as the inhabitants used gossip to negotiate relationships with their neighbors and make places for themselves in the social\, economic\, and political hierarchy of the community.\n\nEnjoy an engaging conversation\, audience Q&A\, and book signing.

DESCRIPTION:Members of the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts present their annual holiday show\, The Art of Giving\, from November 11th through December 31st with an Opening Reception on November 28th from 6 – 9pm. \nEach holiday season the members of the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts transform the gallery to showcase original holiday ornaments and hand-made gifts. The gallery’s 21 members work in a variety of media\, providing a wide array of fine art and fine craft for holiday shoppers. The glass art includes hand-blown and kiln-formed vessels\, ornaments\, hummingbird feeders and paperweights. The jewelry in the show covers a variety of styles and techniques\, from copper and bronze to sterling and fine silver necklaces\, earrings\, bracelets and rings\, some with gold accents and stones. Visitors will also find metal sculpture\, figurative sculpture\, turned wood\, pottery\, and hand-made furniture. Oil\, watercolor\, and acrylic paintings\, scratchboard\, collage and mixed media work festively surround the three-dimensional pieces on pedestals. \nHoliday ornaments and other decorations are an annual specialty. \n\nArtist Lynn Wartski has created one-of-a-kind felted wool ornaments made with quilt batting and colored wool which she needle-felts to achieve the desired shape and fullness.\nFurniture maker Pete Rodrigues made ornaments by cutting thin slices of hardwood\, filling voids in the wood with transparent colored epoxy.\nPainter Chris Graebner creates small scratchboard ornaments. Each ornament is different\, and each is an original piece of art.\nPotter Evelyn Ward has created hand-built\, raku-fired bird ornaments in many sizes and colors. She also has adorable ceramic ladybugs.\nArtist Jude Lobe has created more of her southwestern themed shaman ornaments as thoughtful holiday gifts.\nPainter Ellie Reinhold has returned with her unique lotus pod ornaments for the holiday season.\nArtist Sally Terrell has created framed mini scratchboards\, which can hang either on the wall or a tree.\nAs always\, glassblower Pringle Teetor has made beautiful blown-glass balls in many colors\, patterns and textures. DESCRIPTION:Informal creative sessions – a time for artists\, dabblers\, and anyone seeking a creative outlet to share inspiration and camaraderie while creating their own art in their medium(s) of choice. \nYou are welcome to bring work in progress or start something new. You can use your own supplies or supplies we have here\, or a combination – we have on hand materials ranging from substrates to paints\, tools\, and mixed media and art journalling materials\, as well as reference materials. \nAll skill levels are welcome — while there is no instruction\, you will find friendly people\, suggestions\, and reference materials. \nPay as you please\, $15 suggested (we recognize everyone’s usage is different\, so please just pay what you think is fair). We set out a jar for cash or check\, and can supply a paylink if you want to pay by card online. \nFor adults and mature teens\, all skill levels welcome; school age youth welcome if accompanied by a supervising adult.
